Care and Cleaning

All J+G jewelry is solid 14k gold or sterling silver, both of which will last a lifetime if properly cared for.  Over time exposure to moisture and air will cause a natural patina to appear on the surface of all metals except pure 24k gold and platinum.  Exposure to harsh chemicals can accelerate tarnishing or even etch the surface of the metal.  There are some things you can do to prevent unnecessary tarnishing but eventually all jewelry will benefit from a good cleaning.

Prevention

  • Keep it dry and clean

    • If you shower or swim with your jewelry, take time to rinse and dry your jewelry

    • Don't leave unworn jewelry in the bathroom with excessive heat and humidity

  • Stay away from chemicals

    • Makeup and lotions can cause tarnishing and collect in small crevices.

    • Swimming in hot tubs and hot springs can rapidly accelerate a dark patina.

    • If you are using harsh chemicals or cleaning products, remove jewelry.

  • Seal it up

    • Seal unworn jewelry in individual plastic baggies to prevent oxidation

    • You can add anti-tarnish strips in the bags to further protect jewelry

Cleaning

  • Mild soap and water can be used along with a soft toothbrush to remove oils, lotions and surface dirt.

  • Toothpaste and a soft cloth can be used to lightly polish the surface of the metal. Rinse with water

  • Heavily tarnished sterling silver can be more difficult to restore but these tips really work

    • Bring 1 liter of water to boil and add one tablespoon of baking soda (or non-chlorine powdered laundry detergent) and a piece of aluminum foil. Using kitchen tongs, dip the jewelry in for 30 seconds.

    • Apply a thick past of baking soda and water on surface of jewelry and lightly rub with sponge.

  • For heavily tarnished gold, apply thick baking soda and water paste then pour vinegar over the mix.

  • Always rinse and dry your jewelry thoroughly with clean water and cloth after cleaning.
